ABOUT SORIANO
Soriano nel Cimino, at 520 metres above
sea level and with a population of 9,000 is a wonderful
base for exploring things Italian. Located about 1 hour
north of Rome, in the northern part of Lazio, between
the Tyrrhenian sea and the Apennines, Soriano is 15 km
from Viterbo and only 20 kms from Umbria. It is 48 kms
from Orvieto. It is 15 kms from Orte (about 20 mins by
bus or car), which is a major rail hub linking northern
and southern Italy. Soriano is close to the A1 highway
that runs from north to south.
The
close proximity of Soriano to Viterbo, Orte and Orvieto
and other wonderful towns and cities make it an ideal
base for day trips, either by car or by bus and train.
The position, on the Monte Cimino means that summer
months are cooler than in Rome (maximum about 30 C). In
addition the proximity to public transport make it
possible to traverse Lazio, Umbria, Tuscany, and Le
Marche to visit such many marvellous places as Rome,
Orvieto, Perugia, Siena and Florence, to name a few.
Soriano
has a sense of community. It also offers many
interesting walks within the town, and offers
possibilities to wander around, buy at the shops in
Piazza Guielmo Marconi and Piazza Vittore Emanuele, go
to one of the bars especially Bar Centrale and Bar Roma
and eat at one of the restaurants. Our three nearest
restaurants are I Tre Scalini, Taverna dei Frati and I
Due Camini.
The town has a wide range of small
shops, boutiques, a post office, banks, ATM’s, 2
internet points, fruit shops, general stores, grocers, a
small super market, bakers, butchers, hairdressers,
pharmacy and a newsagent. There are also 8 restaurants
and several bars.
Take time out to explore the delightful
town and medieval area over which the Orsini castle
looms. In the medieval village of Soriano nel Cimino,
you can see the Castello Orsini, which Pope Nicholas III
had built in the 13th century the Fontana Vecchia, a
Viterbese fountain built in 1447. Take time to explore
the districts surrounding the castle. You can also enjoy
the wonderful views over the Tiber Valley and breathe in
the wonderful fresh mountain air.
Festivals
There are a number of religious and
historical events throughout the year and in summer,
July and August there are special festivities that
include an annual jazz festival, theatre, musical entertainment and artistic and
sporting events. A special event in Soriano is the
chestnut festival (Sagra delle Castagne), which is held
in during the first two weekends in October. Over 500
participants in medieval and renaissance costumes
represent the four districts or contradas of the town
(Papacqua, Rocca, San Giorgio, Trinita). The districts
compete for honour and glory and display their skills in
ring jousting, archery and flag waving. Festival events
include re-enactment of 15th and 16th century battles,
investiture and duels of medieval knights, swordfights,
the revelation of the secrets and torture chamber of the
Orsini castle to name a few. Naturally, the symbol of
the festival, chestnuts, are abundant.
